SXSW 2027: How a Brand Should Show Up in Austin. Dates, the New Footprint and What Wild Fork Taught Us.

Guests with Sunset Soda bottles inside the Wild Fork Rhythm and Roast room at SXSW 2024, Austin

SXSW 2027 runs March 15 to 21 in downtown Austin. Innovation goes Monday to Saturday, Music and Film and TV run all seven days, Comedy starts Wednesday the 17th, and SXSW EDU opens the week early on the 13th. Seven days, every track at once, for the second year running. We took Wild Fork to Austin in 2024 and built Rhythm and Roast there. Brands have started asking us about March, so this is the guide we give them.

There is no convention center. Plan around that.

The Austin Convention Center closed in April 2025 and the new building does not open until 2029. In 2026 SXSW spread across about 75 venues with three clubhouses as home bases: Innovation at Brazos Hall on East 4th, Film and TV at 800 Congress, Music at the Downright hotel at the top of Red River. The Expo moved to the Fairmont. Organizers have said the 2026 footprint was too spread out and 2027 will be tighter. The Paramount is closed for restoration during SXSW 2027, so the film crowd shifts too.

For a brand, there is no front door to set up beside anymore. You pick the clubhouse your audience walks out of and you put your room within a five minute walk of it. A beautiful house twelve blocks from the right people is an empty house.

Pick the badge before you pick the block

Brands that try to reach all three end up in a room nobody can find. Pick one.

Why a food brand worked at a music and tech festival

Wild Fork came to us with 75,000 Instagram followers and about fifty likes a post. Before we built anything in Austin we spent seven weeks running every one of their channels and recruiting grill guys, meal planners and explorers into a creator and ambassador program. Then on March 15, 2024 at Wanderlust Wine Co. we opened Rhythm and Roast: a BBQ cook-off with two chefs and three judges, DJ Bellz on the decks, Jazlynn Q headlining, a social corner built for content, and a history of Wild Fork room you walked through to leave with a hand-made tee or hat. Thirty-plus ambassadors were on foot across the festival all week. Sunset Soda came in as sponsor and partner.

Six hundred people came through the door. Engagement lifted 468 percent, impressions went up 80 percent to 496,202 over the seven weeks, followers grew 23 percent, and the app push after the event drove 700-plus downloads. Nobody was handed a posting script. The room was worth posting about, so people posted. The full numbers are in the Wild Fork case study.

Austin rewards a reason. A brand that gives people something to do, taste or take home wins. A brand that shows up with a logo wall and an open bar is one of two hundred that week.

The calendar

Monday and Tuesday belong to Innovation and the arriving crowd. Wednesday and Thursday are the middle of the week, when everyone is in town and nobody is tired yet. Friday night and the weekend belong to Music. We ran Wild Fork on a Friday in 2024 because the festival crowd was the audience. If your audience holds an Innovation badge, aim for Tuesday or Wednesday evening and you will have a better chance of being the best option on their list.

Venues and crews in downtown Austin book out by December for March. Anything on a street or sidewalk, including a team handing out merch, goes through City of Austin permitting and the venue will not do it for you. If you are reading this in the fall with a March idea, send it now.

What it costs

Our intake form uses budget bands from under $25K to $150K and up. A one-day, content-first activation with product sampling and a street team is the most efficient way into Austin and sits in the lower bands. A take-over house for the week is a different conversation. The venue moves the number more than anything else, and March rates in Austin are not January rates. A sponsor partner, the way Sunset Soda joined Wild Fork, can offset a real share of it. Tell us the goal and the band and we scope the room to fit.

What brands get wrong in Austin

  1. Treating it like a trade show. Nobody walks a floor anymore. They walk a city. Your room has to be a destination on its own.
  2. Spending it all on the day. Wild Fork's numbers came from the seven weeks before the event as much as the event itself. The room is the loudest day of a longer run, not the run.
  3. Swag nobody keeps. The hand-made Wild Fork tees and hats were still being worn around Austin on Sunday. If the merch is not worth wearing after the festival, do not print it.
  4. Casting by follower count. Thirty ambassadors who actually like the product beat three influencers reading a brief. We cast by trust and fit.
  5. Forcing the post. A posting requirement produces content that looks like one. Build the room right and the posts come.

Not based in Austin? Neither are we.

We are a Miami agency. We have produced in Austin for SXSW, in Chicago for Lollapalooza, in Long Beach for ComplexCon and in Cannes. The producers travel, the crew and vendors are local, and the brand gets one team from the first call to the last photo. If December is first on your calendar, start with Art Basel 2026. If March is the moment, send the brand, the badge your people hold and the number that matters, and we reply within one business day with a point of view, not a deck. Everything we do is on the services page.
